Lumens vs Candela: How to Choose a Weapon-Mounted Light

Weapon light guide
Lumens get the headlines. Candela does the work.
Two numbers decide how a weapon light performs. Here is what each one means, how to read a spec sheet, and which lights fit pistols, carry guns and rifles.
Lumens
Total light output
Candela
Peak beam intensity
2 × √cd
Beam distance in meters

Lumens vs candela in plain English

Lumens
The total amount of light coming out of the head. More lumens fills a room, lights up walls and ceilings, and helps you see the whole space.
Candela
How intense the brightest spot of the beam is. More candela means the light reaches farther and stays bright on target at distance.
FLOOD (more lumens, wide spill) THROW (more candela, tight hotspot) Lights up a whole room, less reach Reaches far, punches through bright light

The numbers, side by side

Look at the SureFire X300T Turbo: fewer lumens than a TLR-7 HL-X, but three times the candela. That is a light built to reach out.

Same lumens, very different reach Lumens Candela SureFire X300T Turbo 650 lm 66,000 cd · ~514 m Streamlight TLR-7 HL-X 1,000 lm 22,000 cd · ~297 m Streamlight TLR-7X 500 lm 5,000 cd · ~141 m ProTac Rail Mount HL-X Pro 1,000 lm 50,000 cd · ~447 m ProTac 2.0 HP 2,000 lm 85,000 cd · ~583 m

Why candela matters for defense

A tight, intense hotspot helps you identify a threat at distance and see past bright backlighting, glare and smoke. Trainers often call this getting through a "photonic barrier." Lumens still matter indoors, where spill off walls and ceilings shows you the room. The best duty lights balance both.

Use What to look for Example
Concealed carry pistol Small size, 500+ lumens, rail-specific fit Streamlight TLR-7X
Duty / home-defense pistol 1,000 lumens, 15,000+ candela Streamlight TLR-7 HL-X
Long-distance pistol / carbine High candela, 50,000+ SureFire X300T Turbo
Rifle 1,000+ lumens and 50,000+ candela Streamlight ProTac Rail Mount HL-X Pro, ProTac 2.0 HP

4 tips before you buy

  1. Match the holster. A light changes which holster fits. See our holster guide.
  2. Check the rail. Compact lights are often made for one specific rail (Glock 43X/48, P365, 1913 short rail).
  3. Battery type. CR123A, rechargeable or USB-C. Carry spares or a charging plan.
  4. Switch. Practice activation until you can run it under stress.
Key takeaways
  • Lumens = total light. Candela = how hard the beam reaches.
  • Approximate beam distance in meters = 2 × √candela.
  • Indoors, lumens light the room; outdoors and through glare, candela wins.
  • Pick a light that fits your rail and your holster.
