How to Zero a Pistol Red Dot: 6 Steps and the Click Math

How-to
Zero your pistol red dot in 6 steps
A dot is only as good as its zero. Here is the simple process we use, plus the math behind those clicks.

Pick your zero distance

10 yd
Quick, common for carry
15 yd
Good all-around
25 yd
Popular for duty

Pick one distance and stay consistent. Many duty shooters choose 25 yards so the dot is on at distance and only a little off up close.

The 6 steps

1
Check the mount
Use the correct screws and the manufacturer torque spec. Witness marks help you spot movement.
2
Rough it in
Bore sight or shoot at 5-7 yards to get on paper.
3
Shoot a group
5 careful shots from a rest at your zero distance.
4
Find the center
Measure from the center of the group to your aim point.
5
Adjust
Turn windage and elevation in the direction of the arrows to move impact.
6
Confirm
Shoot another group. Repeat until it is centered.

What one click moves

Many pistol dots adjust 1 MOA per click (check your manual). One MOA is about 1.047" at 100 yards, so at pistol distances it is tiny:

Distance 1 MOA click moves about
10 yd ~0.1"
15 yd ~0.16"
25 yd ~0.26"
50 yd ~0.52"

So at 25 yards, moving impact 2" takes roughly 8 clicks.

Key takeaways
  • Pick one zero distance and stick with it.
  • Shoot groups from a rest, then adjust.
  • 1 MOA is about 1/4" at 25 yards.
