How to Build a California-Legal Patrol Rifle: Parts Checklist
Build guide
Building a California-legal patrol rifle
A capable AR-15 is legal in California if you build it the right way. Here is a parts checklist for a featureless or fixed-magazine rifle with an optic, light and sling.
Featureless
Normal mag release, but no pistol grip, flash hider, folding/telescoping stock, thumbhole stock or forward pistol grip.
Fixed magazine
Keep the features, but the magazine can only come out when you open the action.
Both use 10-round magazines and need at least a 16" barrel and 30" overall length. Full details: California magazine and rifle guide.
| Part | Featureless build | Fixed-mag build |
|---|---|---|
| Barrel | 16"+ | 16"+ |
| Muzzle | Brake or compensator | Brake, comp or flash hider |
| Stock | Fixed | Fixed or adjustable |
| Grip | Fin-style or featureless grip | Standard pistol grip OK |
| Optic | Red dot, holographic or LPVO | Same |
