Why new guns are showing up
For years, almost no new semi-auto pistols made the roster because of California's microstamping rule. In March 2023 a federal court blocked that requirement in Boland v. Bonta. The Ninth Circuit later reinstated the chamber load indicator and magazine disconnect requirements while the appeal continues, so a pistol still needs those features. On September 3, 2026 the DOJ added 25 semi-auto models at once, and more have followed. The chart below shows who is adding the most.

How the roster works
Dealer sales
A licensed dealer can sell a new handgun to the public only if that exact model is on the roster.
Private party transfers
Used off-roster handguns can still change hands between private parties through a dealer.
Exemptions
Sworn law enforcement and some other buyers are exempt. Ask us about our LE program.
Gear for popular new roster guns
Need a holster, light or red dot for your new pistol? Shop by firearm or read our red dot footprint guide.
Key takeaways
- The roster decides which new handguns California dealers can sell.
- Microstamping is blocked for now; chamber load indicator and magazine disconnect still apply.
- Dozens of new models were added in September 2026.
